i woke up and remembered this much of the night's dream...

My hands were sweating and cold at the same time, like a first date. I hesitantly lowered my hand into the dark, wet- grey mesh of tiny entangled bodies. I took aim for the closest, distinguishable form. Awkwardly I tried to pinch the soft area above the squirming body, like I did with Dex, when he was a pup, but just as my fingers felt the body's sticky fur, something startled me and I unnecessarily ripped my hand back. I had encroached completely unsuspected, it was all in my mind, nothing was wrong. "shut up shut up shut up...It's freakin tiny and won't be able to bite thru the rubber, just chill out for the love.. Be a man. Now do it." with a false confidence I reached back toward my initial target but it had already become consumed by the other burrowing forms. A larger one had surfaced closer to the top and so I reached out and closed my fingers around the flabby skin above it's neck. I felt a small shudder race up my arm. "Okay, it doesn't even seem to care, now just pull it out. This isn't that big of a deal, stop being a pansy...but what if one of the ticks detaches? Ugh just don't think about it, in fact stop thinking all together, lamalamalamalamalamalama" I began to pull and could feel the skin tighten across the animals body, the sweat dropping from my face. The rodent's head instinctivly spun around and with unusual acrobatics sunk his tiny row of daggers into my thumb. Startled, i could feel the power of it's strong jaws, but dan was right, nothing broke the skin and so it really didnt hurt. "Good job, you didn't freak out." With it's jaw attacking my thumb I pulled the frightened rodent out of the bag and on to the soft tortilla. "I'm glad I listened to Dan...I'd be coughing out my freakin brain right about now without those gloves...screw Shelly...she doesn't have a clue." On the tortilla, the rat's jaws released and it's body became limp and flopped onto itself after I released my grasp. The body lay motionless except for an accelerated breathing cycle that slightly lifted and depressed it's chest. "okay easy part is done, now I can start to panic...nono shut up with your worrying it does you no good. How many times do I have to tell you this. Just breath, get the glasses and get to work!" without looking, I reached up for the glasses, like I've done a hundred times in the last week, and pulled back nothing. Curious, I stepped back and looked to the shelf above that held my items, the glasses were there, just pushed over a bit. "I must have bumped it, when I pulled down the tortillas...I think" a strangeness hovered over me, mocking my stupidity, but I brushed it away and slipped the cold steel around my head, covering my eyes. Darkness enveloped me for an instant before I turned the glasses on and then the usual haze staggered a bit while my eyes adjusted to the awful colors.
